Work experience in Estonia:
Tartu lies on the banks of the River Emajõgi. It is the capital of Southern Estonia, the second largest city in Estonia and the oldest in the Baltic States. Tartu is a modern student city with a rich historical heritage and culture.
Tartu is the intellectual capital of Estonia where national awareness and the culture of Estonia was born. It still has a very large student population (ca 20%) and the best time to meet them is in the spring, where The Student Spring Days combine youthful exuberance with academic traditions.
As intellectual capital of Estonia this city has a large number of theatre performances, concerts, festivals and conferences happen all year round. Tartu is a hot bed of creative and scientific culture: with high quality promenade concerts, the Emajõgi River Summer theatre, the Hanseatic Days and various music events – you’ll never get bored. Tartu is also home to more than 20 museums.
Host Organisation
TH Liidu Projektid is a non-governmental training organisation founded in 2004 that has been involved in several Leonardo da Vinci projects as sending and receiving partner. In Estonia THLP has organised a Leonardo mobility traineeship for over 300 mobility workers and pupils in the initial vocational education. THLP has contacts in a variety of enterprises and other organisations all over Estonia and has a great deal of experience in carrying out mobility programmes for the above-mentioned target groups. You can learn more about TH Liidu Projektid on: http://www.thlp.ee/index.html
Language Course
Your programme begins with a Language course. This will be a basic introduction to the Estonian language and culture. The course will run for 2 weeks, from Monday to Friday. This is a key part of your work experience in Estonia, so attendance is compulsory. Although you are expected to learn the basic features of the language, the working language during your work experience will be English.
International and local travel
Your international travel will be arranged by ETS. Many UK airports offer flights to Tallinn. You can reach Tartu directly over Riga and Stockholm, but as we book according to price and availability, London airports are likely to be chosen. From Tallinn buses every half an hour leave for Tartu (about 2,5 h the estimated bus travel time). Railway is also used, but trains leave only a few times per day.
On arrival at Tartu you’ll be met by a representative of the Hosting Organisation who will accompany you to your accommodation.
Accommodation
You will be offered accommodation with a host family on a self-catering basis. In some cases, you may be sharing your accommodation with other participants or other international students.
Work placement
Once your language course is completed, the real work begins. Your placement will last for 10 weeks. You’ll be working in and around Tartu, so you will need to travel into work using public transport. Be sure to account for travel time.
